| H.E.A.L. Announces “Adopt a Room” Campaign for New Domestic Violence Shelter Help End Abuse for Life Inc., also known as H.E.A.L., is launching an “Adopt a Room” (SEE COST LIST BELOW) campaign to furnish The Nest, Lincoln County’s first comprehensive shelter and service center for victims of Domestic Violence. “Renovation of the building is well underway,” states H.E.A.L. Board Chair, Cynthia Culbertson, “and the first floor of The Nest is due to be ready for furnishings as early as February 1st.” This area of the building is critical to providing services for victims, and consists of a lobby, four administrative offices, a conference room, three handicapped bathrooms, two kitchens, a dining and craft area and the first two of 14 residential rooms in the shelter. “Furnishing the 14-bedroom multi-use facility is a costly venture,” states H.E.A.L. Board member and Chair of the Building/Architecture Committee Debbie Haines, “and our timetable and budget urge us to look to our community for help.” (Furnishings and fixtures are expected to cost over $80K) Several organizations have already pledged their assistance, including the Ruidoso Valley Greeters who are adopting the first two handicapped bedrooms. The 2006 Leadership Lincoln class has also taken on H.E.A.L. as its class project, initiating a corporate sponsorship program to help furnish The Nest. Other significant donations include $4K from the Ruidoso Valley Chamber of Commerce, $2K from the Pine Top Car Club, as well as the proceeds from H.E.A.L.’s Fall Benefit “Survivor” which netted over $10K. Several Lincoln County organizations, such as the Carrizozo Woman’s Club, Alto Women’s Golf League, have donated funds and the Capitan Chamber of Commerce has recently launched a fundraising drive to help H.E.A.L. “H.E.A.L. is flooded with calls from generous citizens who want to offer real goods from sheets to shampoos,” explains Steve Duffy, a Development Consultant for H.E.A.L. “Although we will need these items at some point in the near future, our focus right now is specific furniture and equipment,” Duffy states. Although AA Storage in Ruidoso Downs is generously providing a free storage unit until March, the space is already full, so cash donations remain the most appropriate for the organization at this point. A successful “Adopt a Room” program brings the agency closer to serving clients and Phase I of the renovation focuses on readying the administrative areas, so that some services such as counseling, data collection, and referrals may be offered to victims as early as Spring of 2006. Phases II and III will focus on the remaining residential rooms needed to shelter victims. For more information on the “Adopt A Room” call Steve Duffy 336-2332. |
